On the basis of Freud\u2019s \u201cexperience of satisfaction\u201d we have proposed a first working definition of <i>jouissance<\/i> as the (benefit gained from) the motor tension underlying the action which was [once] adequate in bringing relief to the drive and, on the basis of their striking reciprocal resonances, we have proposed that<\/span><span lang=\"EN-ZA\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA; mso-fareast-language: NL; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">central dopaminergic systems<\/span><span lang=\"EN-ZA\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA; mso-fareast-language: NL; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\"> could embody the physiological architecture of Freud\u2019s concept of the drive. W<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: NL; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">e have then distinguished two constitutive axes to <i>jouissance<\/i>: one concerns the subject\u2019s <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: NL; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">body<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"> and the other the subject\u2019s <\/span>history<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">. Four distinctive aspects of these axes are discussed both from a metapsychological and from a neuroscience point of view. <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-ZA\" style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA; mso-fareast-language: NL; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">We conclude that <i>jouissance<\/i> could be described as an accumulation of body tension, fuelling for action, but continuously balancing between reward and anxiety, and both marking the physiology of the body with the history of its commemoration and arising from this inscription as a constant push to act and to repeat.
