She is a PhD student at the Department of Clinical and Differential Psychology under the supervision of Pr. Dr. Ariane Bazan. Giulia Olyff received a one-year research grant from the American Psychoanalytic Association for her PhD research. Giulia is also working as a psychologist at the Maison Ouverte which welcomes toddlers from birth to 3 years old and their families and which is inspired by the philosophy of Françoise Dolto.

Her PhD research concerns primary and secondary process mentation at the interface of clinical and cognitive approaches. More precisely, this research is about wordplays and people’s capacity to solve them without being aware of doing so. This research springs out of Ariane Bazan’s endeavour to design linguistic tools for a diagnostic process which is neither symptomatic (phenomenological) nor exclusively singularizing (as would be the psychoanalytic development of the logic of the subject or of the single case). The aim is to enable a diagnostic process in relation to the way subjects handle language in terms of structural and dynamical categories (e.g. neurosis / psychosis; actual pathology / psychopathology). Such a diagnosis would merely characterise the subject’s position into language thereby avoiding a labeling which would the subject into a pathological identity, be this either related to biological deficits or to social inadequacy.
